History

With more than 30 years of direct marketing experience we have grown from a small Milwaukee-based firm to one of the most accomplished direct response marketing agencies in the country, with offices in Milwaukee, WI and Washington, DC.

Vice President, Integrated Marketing – Washington, DC

ABD Direct, a full service direct marketing fundraising firm, is looking for a talented and seasoned professional to help us lead and deliver winning integrated marketing strategies for nonprofit and advocacy clients working on such vital issues as saving the environment, defending human and reproductive rights, protecting animals, leading the resistance to Donald Trump and working to help elect Democrats in 2018 and 2020.

For more than 30 years, we have fostered dedicated partnerships with non-profit charitable and advocacy organizations, pushing the boundaries of direct response fundraising and securing the resources and support they need to fulfill their critical missions. ABD Direct has a long history of developing forward-thinking direct response fundraising solutions which pave the way for success for some of the nation’s leading non-profit organizations and progressive political campaigns.

ABD Direct is currently seeking a Vice President, Integrated Services who will lead the company’s digital division to provide a robust set of integrated and stand-alone digital services for our clients. The VP will chart a course for growth of this division, leading new business development for the digital division, overseeing existing staff, vendor relationships, and resources to set our direction for future growth. The VP will be not only a seasoned fundraiser with the knowledge and desire to be on the leading-edge of the digital fundraising evolution, but also possess comprehensive knowledge of how to drive integrated fundraising programs and be a skilled professional with significant experience in working across various teams, building and growing new teams, new business development, and project management.

Key Responsibilities

New Business Development (35%)

  • Responsible, with support and input from senior leadership, for design and execution of ABD Direct Digital new business development plan
  • Helps produce new client proposals and serves as strategic and creative lead on new client pitches
  • Works with all team members to maximize industry opportunities, including identification and cultivation of new clients generated from those events
  • Networks with own potential client contacts as well as existing ABD Direct clients to create new business opportunities for the digital department
  • Represents ABD Direct at industry events, both through attendance and presentations

Account Strategy/Client Oversight (45%)

  • Serves as senior account lead, providing the vision required to set program direction, strategy, and goals
  • Works with client to develop and execute strategies for growing the file and expanding pool of monthly giving and midlevel donors. This could include:
    • Managing email communications programs (fundraising and advocacy)
    • Developing and executing online acquisition efforts;
    • Search engine marketing and Google Grant management;
    • Display advertising; and
    • Social advertising and social media management.
  • Keeps abreast of industry trends to ensure our clients are utilizing the latest and best tools and strategies to engage their donors for a long-term and profitable relationship.
  • Manages client relationships as well as relationships with other vendors involved with each client.
  • Oversees schedule and agenda development for major client meetings and quarterly reviews.
  • Leads brainstorming session and program reviews that bring together staff from the client, ABD Direct, and our various vendor partners.
  • Works with creative team on campaign development, pulling in additional team members and resources as needed.
  • Writes or contributes to strategic briefs. Writes or edits copy as needed.
  • Analyzes and applies data to achieve clients’ program growth and productivity
  • Develops program plan and then works with team to develop a working budget that is the roadmap for the year.
  • Spearheads ongoing analysis and reporting to measure success, identify challenges, and recommend course corrections.

Internal Management (20%)

  • Responsible for developing long term and annual strategy and budget for department
  • Serves as a member of the ABD Direct senior leadership team, helping to set direction of digital consulting department
  • Manages all members of the ABD Direct digital team:
    • Responsible for providing professional growth and development opportunities for each direct report
    • Ensures annual goals are established and a plan is in place to assist the team in meeting these goals;
    • Works to create a great place to work to support overall morale, staff retention, and inspire commitment to shared company vision.
  • Supports the overall brand and marketing efforts of ABD Direct, both internally and externally, including, but not limited to representing ABD Direct at industry events, both through attendance and presentations, volunteering in industry committees, groups, and the like, participating in internal promotions and office events.
    • Drives ABD Direct’s online presence, managing editorial content and calendar for the website and social channels and ensuring this supports the overall brand and marketing efforts of the company.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • 15+ years experience in non-profit, for profit or political direct marketing, with a concentrated emphasis on digital advocacy or fundraising, or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of business plan development and successful implementation of plan.
  • Adept at planning, prioritizing, organizing, following through deadline-oriented projects
  • Able to build, grow and manage high-functioning teams working under tight deadlines and revenue expectations.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence required to work within and across key teams and divisions, both internally and externally.
  • Commitment to maintaining excellence in client service.
  • Able to work independently in a changing environment, meet tight deadlines, exercise good judgment and decision-making to set and meet results-oriented goals.
  • Some travel required; ability to work off-hours in support of client meetings and events.
  • Excellence in MS Office, particularly in Excel and Access to support reporting and analytics requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Account Director – Washington, DC

ABD Direct is currently seeking Account Director to join its Washington, DC team. The Account Director plays the lead role on our client teams. Every day you will help chart the course for some of the most inspiring causes in the country – setting strategy, developing budgets, managing creative, and overseeing the implementation of complex, multi-channel fundraising programs. Additionally, the Account Director serves as the client relationship mananger, ensuring expectations are met for each of the clients we serve while managing and guiding the account teams to work in partnership with our clients.

The Account Director must demonstrate the ability to lead teams, meet client revenue goals, and to take an idea from conception to reality and the experience to guide a team in both strategy development and execution. The ideal candidate is a creative, dedicated and energetic fundraiser, with a passion for helping progressive causes change the world.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Client Management

  • Plays primary role in day-to-day relationship management for a portfolio of non-profit organizations.  Maintains regular communications with clients to understand shifting needs and priorities.  Manages relationship to ensure long-term retention of our client-base.
  • Leads and oversees the development and execution of fundraising strategies, goals and objectives for an integrated direct response marketing portfolio. 
    • Responsible for directing strategies for meeting or exceeding revenue targets on behalf of their clients.
    • Implements annual fundraising campaigns and programs.
  • Provides robust reporting and analysis to the client:
    • Ensures weekly stat reports are ready for the client
    • Directs/oversees ongoing analytics projects and one-off projects as required to ensure the overall health of the program.
    • Prepares written reports and analysis to demonstrate the status of a client’s program;
    • Responsible for establishing quarterly review meetings and ensuring the creation of all deliverables is complete in advance of the meeting;
    • Responsible for establishing and leading any regular or one-off meetings with the client or the internal team.

Campaign Implementation and Team Leadership

  • Oversees a client team that supports the development and implementation of the annual fundraising strategy for our clients.  The team:
    • Oversees the selection criteria, test strategies and performance evaluation of direct mail appeals and online marketing campaigns.
    • Prepares and closely monitors direct response timelines and calendars.
    • Oversees the trafficking, editing and approval of all creative content and supporting materials.
    • Manage and direct external partners and vendor teams to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and high-level performance for the overall program.
    • Coordinates with internal and external service providers to ensure proper list segmentation, coding and reporting.
    • Works cross functionally and collaboratively with marketing and communications, engagement, program and donor services departments as it relates to direct mail, online marketing, social media, website and database.

Management

  • Directly supervises staff:
    • Responsible for providing professional growth and development opportunities for each direct report
    • Ensures annual goals are established and a plan is in place to assist the team in meeting these goals;
    • Works to create a great place to work to support overall morale, staff retention, and inspire commitment to shared company vision.
  • Participates as a member of the DC leadership team.
  • Supports the overall brand and marketing efforts of ABD Direct, both internally and externally, including, but not limited to representing ABD Direct at industry events, both through attendance and presentations, volunteering in industry committes, groups, and the like, participating in internal promotions and office events.

  • 7+ years experience in non-profit direct marketing or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience.

  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel.
